Hi everybody. Think of this as a State of the Blog address.
First, I would like to thank everyone for reading SNES A Day. I am floored by the response I’ve gotten and that has been a constant source of encouragement and motivation. When I started this site in May, I never thought I would get anyone to read it much less gain a regular readership. Again, thank you so much!
As you have probably noticed, SNES A Day has gone through a bit of a makeover. As the blog got larger, both in terms of audience and in terms of amount of content, I was finding myself bumping into the limitations of the old theme and WordPress.com in general. As part of this makeover, I am planning on moving off WordPress.com and onto a self-hosting platform.
What does this mean for you?
Hopefully, not too much. I’m confident the migration will be seamless, and I’m going to try to move everything over during a low-traffic period. The only thing that might require some action on your part is if you are one of my WordPress.com followers who have opted in to receive email updates. WordPress.com’s Support site says it better than I could:
“…while your email subscribers will continue to receive email notifications of new posts as before, WordPress.com followers will only see new posts in the Reader. They will not receive email updates unless they subscribe to receive those on your new site…”
I don’t know how many of you this affects, but making sure this is as hassle-free as possible for you all is my priority. If you encounter any issues after the move, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or tweet at me and we will figure it out together.
The biggest benefit of this move will be the ability to get a better idea of how the SNES A Day readers use the site. As I get more data on what you all click on and how you spend your time on the site, expect more changes to make the site experience better.
But I want your opinion! What am I doing well? What can I do better? What do you want to see more of? I have some ideas for the future, but I’m either limited by time, by money, or by both. I’m open to all ideas, though.
And speaking of feedback…
In June, once I noticed that SNES A Day was growing and gaining readership, I decided to put out what amounted to a tip jar and offer my blog as a paid subscription on the Amazon Kindle store. The result was about what I expected, and that offering has pretty much covered the financial cost of doing this site.
But it doesn’t cover the time investment and opportunity cost of doing reviews, videos, and screenshots of seven games a week. There’s no way SNES A Day will bring in a lot of money, but if I can get a few dollars a month, it would be a bit easier to invest in expanding the site’s offerings.
If I do this, I don’t want to do it in a way that would alienate my readers. You all keep me going, and I wouldn’t want to do anything to drive away even one person who has supported me and the site. Would a banner ad be okay? How about if I included Amazon Affiliate links to the games I’m covering? Would both be acceptable? I want to know what you guys think, so comment below or contact me in private if you feel more comfortable doing so.
Thank you for reading SNES A Day!
