John Madden Football ’93 is superior in all respects to the previous Super Nintendo entry in the series. That doesn’t make it worth playing, though.

Go read my review of John Madden Football, and you’ll know everything you need to know about John Madden Football ’93. The graphics are better, at least. I’m not getting headaches after playing for only a few minutes, but the character sprites look pretty identical to the previous game. Receivers are still clueless, rushing is iffy, and the controls are stiff. This is a marginal improvement in most ways.

John Madden Football ’93 falls into the same trap all other realistic sports games fall into: Why play it today? You’re better off playing some arcade-style Tecmo Bowl or Madden 15 on a modern video game console. It’s the best SNES football game so far bar none, if that counts for anything.

Tomorrow: There were very few attempts on the SNES to out-do Contra III: The Alien Wars like GunForce did. Does this one succeed?
